The SCEPTRE Users’ Group Meeting was held on September 30 and October 1, 1999 at Hewlett Packard VCD in Vancouver, WA.

The attendees included:

Larry Ford Agilent Technologies
Larry Truhe Agilent Technologies
Melanie Christenson Ball Aerospace
Mike Hoag CET
Nien Le Cummins Engine
John Hayward EMD
Klaus Ulbrich EMD
Jack Kleiss Kleiss Gears
Rod Kleiss Kleiss Gears
Don Bryant Lubrizol
Randy Parten Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Gary Render Precision Cast
Jerry Williams Precision Cast
Barry Varin VCD Metrology
David Cottrell VCD Metrology
David Ladwig VCD Metrology
Dennis Fox VCD Metrology
Joanne Canillo VCD Metrology
Tim Holscher VCD Metrology

The meeting started at 9:30am. It was noted that this was the first time that a Users’ Group Meeting was held on the West Coast. We could not have picked two better days weather wise than what we had.

Tim Holscher and Joanne Camille from VCD Metrology (HP) started the meeting with general introductions and important information regarding our travels outside of the conference room. Everyone introduced themselves from around the room to break the ice and introduce the new attendees.

Klaus Ulbrich form EMD then proceeded to update the group on these topics:

  1. Gear Analysis - Showed our new report format
  2. Crown - Calculation of an arch from deviations of previous calculations.
  3. Xbar - Averages the selected component of the active point list.
  4. Header - Cleaned up the header area on the print out.
  5. Footer - Cleaned up the footer area on the print out.
  6. DMIS Translator - EMD is creating our own DMIS translator.
  7. Sort - Connects discontinuous data segments into one continuous set of data points.
  8. Autnom & Elmrep Screen - Performs automatic nominal point insertion while in a part program.
  9. Shell - Ability to leave the Sceptre Program at any point and return to Windows. The user may then enter back into Sceptre at the same point that the user originally exited at.

John Hayward from EMD discussed these topics with the group:

  1. Stylus Changer - Displayed our new Indexable Stylus Changer with 72 indexable positions in increments of 5º around the Z axis. EMD’s brochure detailing this new option was passed around to everyone.
  2. Surfin - Discussed the Surface Finish Analysis Report for a typical standardized print out. Displayed is the Raw Profile, Waviness Profile and Roughness Profile along with a handful of most commonly used parameters - Average Height, Total Peak to Valley, Maximum Peak Value above a mean line, Maximum Valley Depth below a mean line, Skew values and Root Mean Square.

Tim Holscher from VCD Metrology made his presentation on Automatic Transfer of Inspection Data (from CMM to Final Report). Explained was how Sceptre was used and the macros he wrote to allow files to be automatically transferred, formatted and stored to the proper spreadsheet.

David Ladwig from VCD Metrology presented his two calibration macros to the group. The calibration macros include a 5 Probe Star Cluster that calibrates any or all probes with any diameter or length automatically and another for calibrating almost any probe in any position on the probe head without needing to adjust the coordinate system or moving the calibration sphere.

Rod Kleiss from Kleiss Gears then presented his experience with the shrinkage of plastic gears and the form error that is generated. Using their Legend, they are able to characterize gears better than with any equipment previously available.

Don Bryant from Lubrizol described the measurement of engine blocks to determine the amount of wear that takes place when using various type of lubricants with specific additives. Using nominal data from ring gages and the "compare" function in Sceptre, Don is able to precisely map the wear using different additives.

Larry Truhe from Agilent Technologies discussed the measurement sequence of hyperbolic shaped components called quadrupoles used in Mass Spectrometry equipment and the accuracies that are required. The Legend is used to measure the hyperbolic profile and straightness accuracies on tungsten, molybdenum and stainless steel rods. Larry is looking to measure the hyperbolic shape more accurately. The process is to measure the actual data points against a nominal set of point and look for the deviation. (The next issue of our newsletter, which is due out shortly, contains an article written by Larry Truhe describing quadrupoles and his measuring process in great detail)

On Friday, October 1, 1999, we had a tour of the HP Metrology Lab and demonstrations of the calibration macros. Klaus worked on a centering routine for the hyperbolic shape for Larry Truhe.

The next User Group Meeting will be held just before the Quality Show in Novi, MI, on June 13th, 2000.

The meeting began at about 9:15 a.m.

Everyone was informed that there would be a two-day SCEPTRE Training session at EMD’s Budd Lake facilities May 18 & 19, 1999. First day will cover basic SCEPTRE operations. The second day will cover advanced operations.

A letter from EMD, stating its compliance with Y2K issues, was discussed and copies distributed.

Discussions followed with Klaus leading the group; they discussed the following:

The Indexable Stylus Changing System. Attendees where advised that it could be seen on a Wenzel CMM in EMD’s booth at Quality Expo; also see information about it on EMD’s web site.

A new option added to the measurement command in SCEPTRE Software for rotary symmetrical parts. It allows probing in a circular motion.

A new crown routine that was added to SCEPTRE Software as a number of users need this feature when measuring cams and gears. The routine can give you a center point when relative to the arc of the crown. It can be found in the new Help Files.

Klaus explained his talk at Oak Ridge on CMM surface finish measurement, and referred to his article on this subject published in the EMD Fall 1998 newsletter.

Bob Nagel of Kennametal discussed how surface finish measurement application is perfect for the work his company is doing to measure the surface of drilled holes. Klaus noted that Boeing Wichita has been using a SCEPTRE-equipped CMM to measure drilled-hole surfaces, which allows them to do a dimensional inspection and check surface finish in the same inspection routine.

Don Bryant of Lubrizol talked about creating a "cone routine" in SCEPTRE and Klaus gave Don some advice and suggestions on how he might be able to implement the routine.

Joe Perun of Moore Tool Company discussed the work he did in Japan and Germany to up grade Moore CMMs to SCEPTRE System. The CMM in Japan is being used to measure heat sinks for super computers. The one in Germany is measuring parts for a radio telescope.

The issue of Printers interfacing with SCEPTRE was discussed. Klaus said that HP print drivers can be a problem and you are better off using generic print-driver software.

A general discussion of "back off" problems with the software was discussed.

The MEAPOS command is discussed and it is agreed that Klaus will demonstrate it next day at the booth.

General Business:

It was agreed that Hewlett-Packard – Vancouver would host the next SCEPTRE Users Group meeting in late September, 1999.

Bob Nagel agreed to make a presentation at the next meeting, and Don Bryant said that, if he got it to work, he would report on his use of the Cone Routine discussed during the meeting.

The meeting adjourned at Noon.

Minutes From Fall '98 Users' Group Meeting
October 20-21, 1998

(Minutes provided by Paul Fitzmaurice)

The SCEPTRE Users' Group met at the Wyndham Garden Hotel near Electronic Measuring Devices' headquarters in Budd Lake, New Jersey on Tuesday for an all-day classroom session.

On Wednesday, the Users' Group met at EMD's facility for a calibration demonstration performed by EMD's Mike Napholz on a LEGEND IMC. In addition, Klaus was on hand to answer any and all questions

For the Classroom Session Klaus brought along a CUBIT Coordinate Gaging Module to demonstrate new things in the SCEPTRE Software and a new touch screen interface option. The new touch screen brings the screen as close to the CMM as possible, allowing for commands to be easily entered and CMM operation to be more efficient.

Klaus also explained new commands in the software, including:

MEA POS
SCA CAL (scan calibration)
APS CAL
ANGL E1, E2 IABS
MOV RD. POSI.

It was noted that the latest software upgrade should bring SCEPTRE users to 3.4. If you are at 3.0 or higher it is just a software upgrade. If you are below 3.0, the upgrade is likely to mean hardware upgrades as well.

Presentations

After Klaus's erudite discussion of new SCEPTRE Commands, SCEPTRE users made presentations on how they were using their SCEPTRE-equipped scanning CMM. Those presenting included:

Mark Bailis, PCC Airfoils -- Mark discussed and passed out to the Group four of his SCEPTRE CMM Code or Programming Examples. They were:

  1. a calibration routine;
  2. inspection of castings of airfoil sections and then by scanning measuring 12 shank length points and angle wing thickness with four probes;
  3. inspecting blue ren cure fixtures for warp; and
  4. a Macro that does an integrated alignment of the airfoil section castings held in place by the castings holding fixture.

Randy Parton, Oak Ridge National Lab -- Randy brought and discussed a part that was scanned with ORNL's LEGEND that will be used for some 3D imaging tests. On overheads, Randy showed a comparison between the data provided by the Legend and the data provided by a Leitz CMM that measured the same part at Y-12. It made for a very interesting comparison.

Rod Kleiss, Kleiss Gears -- discussed his manufacture of plastic gears to replace metal ones and how his scanning LEGEND IMC is proving to be the only way he can measure the molds and ensure high quality in the manufacturing process.

Joe DeFiore, Windfall Products -- brought along and discussed with the group the delicate and difficult parts he is trying to measure for the automotive industry.

Dale Boyer, AMP, Inc. shared for discussion his measuring of two halfs of a part in relationship to a cone. The group discussed how he was able to make these complex measurements by using his SCEPTRE-equipped scanning CMM. Dale also mentioned that without SCEPTRE there would be no way to make such measurements.

Minutes From Spring '98 Users' Group Meeting
April 20, 1998

(Minutes provided by Paul Fitzmaurice)

The seventh meeting of the Sceptre Software Users' Group was held at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare in Rosemont, Illinois, on Monday April 20, 1998 -- the day before Quality Expo opened.

Dale Boyer and AMP will host the next SCEPTRE Users' Group meeting. It will be held some time in October, exact date to be determined. As everyone likes the opportunity to have hands-on sessions with a SCEPTRE equipped CMM, it will be a two-day session. There will also be a maintenance/diagnostic and calibration session performed by Klaus on the CMM for those interested (on the first day) and machine applications on day two of the Users Group.

The Group would like to see the minutes of Users Group meetings put on the EMD web site (so here they are).

Kennametal agreed to do a presentation at the next Users Group meeting.
It was unanimously decided that everyone else has to bring a favorite SCEPTRE software routine, or example that they are willing to share with the Group ... or else they have to have a good joke to tell.

Klaus then took the group through "Surface Finishing" with a SCEPTRE Scanning CMM and passed out a copy of the paper he is working on discussing his work in this field.

Rod Kleiss then discussed gear measurement problems and issues. After Rod's discussion, Klaus discussed commands to measure gears.

The meeting started with Arvid Pasto giving a short overview of HTML. Meetings for 1998 were discussed. The spring meeting will be held the week of the Quality Show (April 20) at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Rosemont, Illinois. EMD will arrange for meeting accommodations. The fall, 1998 meeting it will be held at AMP, Inc., in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Klaus Ulbrich described the new "Windows-like" Sceptre software, and discussed hardware requirements for people who want to upgrade. The new software will coexist somewhat peacefully with Windows or even Windows 95. However, users with the video probe will be limited to 8 megabytes of PC memory because of the memory mapping scheme used by the frame grabber board. Klaus is evaluating other video boards and may eventually have a solution to this problem.

Sam McSpadden discussed the HTML User Program, gave an overview of the equipment and facilities that are available, and led a tour of the HTML facility.

Klaus did his usual questions and answers, gripes, and what's the latest and greatest from EMD. Here are some of the new commands Klaus introduce to us:

MINGAP will find the shortest distance between two elements,

DEFPLT will resize graph and reposition it on the plot so you can put multiple images on one plot, and

DISECT will take scanned data that has shape and will search through to find the transition from point to point and it will create an element.

Visitors were given a tour of the Oak Ridge Centers for Manufacturing Technology (ORCMT) metrology facilities on Monday afternoon. Most of the day Tuesday was devoted to hands-on training.
